Cummins Onan 10 & 12 kW Diesel Generator (HDKCC/HDKCD/HDKCG) — Owner & Technician Service Guide

1800 RPM liquid-cooled Onan Quiet Diesel generator set, 10–12 kW at 120/240 V, used on larger specialty coaches. This guide covers the factory service schedule with part numbers, cooling and belt care, blink-code diagnostics, and safe operation.

Overview

The Onan HDKCC/HDKCD/HDKCG family powers larger specialty coaches: 10,000 W (HDKCC 60 Hz, 41.7 A at 120/240 V), 12,000 W (HDKCD, 50 A), and 10,000 W (HDKCG), with an 8 kW 50 Hz HDKCC variant. The engine is a 1.5 L (1499 cc) three-cylinder, water-cooled, indirect-injection diesel spinning a single-bearing, 4-pole rotating-field alternator at a constant 1800 RPM. Oil capacity is a generous 5.6 L (5.9 qt); the cooling system holds 6.2 L (6.6 qt). The 12 V DC system wants 475 CCA minimum (650 CCA below 0 °F). Note the 12 kW rating is intermittent — continuous power is 85% of rated, so plan loads on the HDKCD around 10.2 kW.

How it works

An integrated microprocessor control manages glow-plug preheat, cranking, engine protection, and voltage regulation. The control switch (local or remote) starts, stops, and primes the set; its status LED flashes during preheat and cranking, stays lit while running, and blinks a fault code after an abnormal shutdown: 1 flash = high coolant temperature, 2 = low oil pressure, 3 = second-level service code (press STOP/PRIME once to read the two-digit code), 4 = over-crank. Because this is a 4-pole machine at fixed 1800 RPM, it is quieter and longer-lived than 3600 RPM sets, but it depends on its belt-driven cooling system and clean filters — most field failures trace back to coolant, belt, or fuel-supply neglect. Rated power derates about 3.5% per 1000 ft above 500 ft and 1% per 10 °F above 77 °F.

Routine maintenance

Intervals are hour-based with calendar backstops; shorten oil and filter intervals in heat and dust. Items marked for a qualified technician tie into emissions and warranty requirements.

Every day or 8 hours

General inspection: oil level, coolant level in the recovery tank, battery connections, and a check for fuel, coolant, and exhaust leaks. Never run with a leak.

Monthly

Clean and check the battery and its connections. Exercise the set at least 2 hours at roughly half load if it sits unused — a single 2-hour run beats several short ones.

Every 250 hours (or annually)

  1. Change engine oil and filter (P/N 122-0893). Run to temperature, drain, spin on the new filter (oil the gasket, hand-tight plus 1/2–3/4 turn), refill 5.6 L (5.9 qt) with 15W-40 (OnaMax) API CF–CI-4 oil. First change at 50 hours on a new engine.
  2. Check V-belt tension: if the belt deflects more than 12 mm (1/2 in) under thumb pressure, have it tightened or replaced (belt P/N 511-0218).

Every 500 hours

  • Replace the air filter element (P/N 140-3072); sooner in dust.
  • Replace the fuel filter (P/N 149-2513) — every 250 hours on B20 biodiesel. Prime 30 seconds and leak-check.

Every 800 hours — technician items

  • Adjust valve lash: 0.18–0.22 mm (0.0071–0.0087 in) cold, intake and exhaust.
  • Check generator slip rings and brushes (this 4-pole machine, unlike the small PMG sets, has a wound rotor).

Every 1500 hours / 5 years — technician items

  • Flush the cooling system, replace the pressure cap, and replace V-belts and coolant hoses. Refill 6.2 L with 50/50 ethylene glycol and distilled water.
  • Check fuel injector opening pressure (spec 13.73 MPa / 1991 psi) — an EPA emissions requirement.

Operating tips

  • Size loads to 85% for continuous duty on the 12 kW model; chronic operation at 100% shortens engine life and trips protective shutdowns.
  • Air conditioners draw 3–4x running wattage at start and battery chargers can add up to 3000 W automatically — stagger A/C starts and lower charge rates before blaming the set for code 13/15 shutdowns.
  • Fuel: ASTM D975, Grade 2-D S15; use 1-D in sustained cold. B5 biodiesel is acceptable; B20 needs an OEM water separator and shortens the fuel-filter interval to 250 hours.
  • The genset fuel pickup is higher in a shared tank than the propulsion pickup — the generator runs out of fuel first by design.
  • Storage over 120 days: disable AGS, change the oil, disconnect the battery (negative first), breaker OFF; prime 30 seconds when returning to service.

Safety

  • Exhaust gas is deadly. Verify CO detectors before every start and every 8 hours of running; never occupy the coach without working detectors, and never run the set in an enclosed space or with vent fans pulling exhaust inside.
  • Turn off Automatic Generator Start and disconnect the negative battery cable before opening panels — AGS-equipped coaches can start the set without warning.
  • Cool the engine before releasing the coolant pressure cap: rotate slowly to vent pressure first. Hot coolant spray causes severe burns.
  • Keep guards and service doors in place — belt, fan, and 240 V hazards live behind them.
  • Diesel fuel is combustible; ethylene glycol is toxic. No ignition sources near fuel work; dispose of coolant per local regulations.

Troubleshooting

Status LED blinks 1 — engine over temperature shutdown
  1. Check coolant level in the recovery tank; add and repair leaks
  2. Clear blocked cooling air inlet/outlet openings
  3. Clean the radiator/heat-exchanger fins (no pressure washer)
  4. Check V-belt tension — a slipping belt kills water pump flow
  5. Reduce connected load
Status LED blinks 2 — low oil pressure shutdown
  1. Check dipstick; add oil if low, drain if overfilled
  2. If level is correct and shutdowns repeat, have the pressure switch and lubrication system serviced
Status LED blinks 4 — over crank (30 s cranking, no start)
  1. Check fuel level — the genset pickup runs dry before the chassis engine's
  2. Prime: hold the switch in STOP/PRIME for 30 seconds
  3. Replace the air filter if dirty
  4. Use the correct oil viscosity for the temperature

  6. In cold weather confirm glow-plug preheat (LED flashes during preheat) before cranking
Status LED blinks 3 — read the 2-digit service code
  1. Press STOP/PRIME once: tens digit flashes, pause, units digit; press again to stop
  2. Code 36 = engine stopped without command: check fuel, prime, air filter, mechanical damage
  3. Code 57 = over prime: a switch was held in STOP/PRIME over 3 minutes
  4. Codes 12/14, 19/22 (governor), 27/35/41/42/43/45/48 = control, sensor, governor, or rotor faults — authorized Cummins service
  5. Codes 33/34 are not assigned
Shuts down under load — code 13 (under voltage) or 15 (under frequency)
  1. Reduce load; stagger air-conditioner starts and lower battery-charger boost rates
  2. On the 12 kW HDKCD remember continuous rating is 85% of nameplate
  3. Check air filter and exhaust for restriction (also flagged by code 22, governor actuator overload)
Code 32 — low cranking speed, or starter engages then disengages
  1. Clean and tighten battery cables at battery and set
  2. Recharge or replace the battery (475 CCA min; 650 CCA below 0 °F)
  3. Correct the oil viscosity
  4. If cranking voltage dips below 6 V, run the vehicle engine while starting; upsize or parallel the battery cables
Code 29 — high battery voltage (over 19 V)
  1. Verify batteries are paralleled at 12 V, not series 24 V
  2. Lower the charger boost rate
Generator runs but no AC power in the coach
  1. Reset the line circuit breaker on the set (2-pole 45 A on 10 kW, 50 A on 12 kW)
  2. Reset breakers in the distribution panel
  3. Reconnect loads one at a time to isolate a shorted appliance or circuit
