Bode Single Drive Door Controller - Operation, Adjustment, and Troubleshooting
Service guide for the Bode Single Drive Controller used on automatic entry doors: how the current-sensing drive works, programming-mode adjustment, obstruction and reversal behavior, seven-segment display codes, and wiring-level troubleshooting.
Overview
The Bode Single Drive Controller is the electronic brain behind the coach's automatic entry door. It runs a single 12 VDC door motor and decides when the door has finished opening or closing by watching motor current rather than relying only on position switches. The board carries a two-digit seven-segment display and a small keypad (SELECT/HOLD, UP, DOWN, SET) used for on-board adjustment, plus relay outputs that switch battery voltage to the motor in either direction.
How the system works
Two command inputs drive everything: OPEN and CLOSE, each triggered by being pulled to ground (typically from a momentary SPDT center-off driver switch, per the 3580 wiring diagram). Two feedback inputs, OPENED and CLOSED, report door position when pulled up to battery voltage. The motor connects through M+ and M- terminals with 16-gauge minimum wiring.
On an open command, the board applies battery voltage to M- and the display flashes OP. The motor runs until it reaches the programmed maximum-current setting - the mechanical stop loads the motor, current rises, and the board cuts power. The display then shows a solid OP, meaning the door is fully open. Closing works the same way in reverse: battery voltage goes to M+, the display flashes CL, and the board waits for the CLOSED position input to go high before letting the motor stall against the seal at its current limit. A solid CL confirms the door is closed and locked against its stop.
Obstruction and safety behavior
Obstruction protection during closing is current-based and automatic: if the motor hits its maximum-current limit before the CLOSED position input has been pulled high, the board interprets that as an obstruction and immediately reverses, driving the door back open. The same logic applies with the optional OPEN SW. EN. feature during opening - if maximum current is reached before the OPENED input signals full travel, power is removed and a close operation begins. A command reversal mid-travel (driver flips the switch) reverses the door immediately. Finally, a 30-second overall timeout removes motor power regardless of state, so a jammed door cannot hold the motor stalled indefinitely; a fresh command input is required to start a new operation.
Adjustment (Programming Mode)
Hold SELECT (HOLD) for three seconds and release to enter Programming Mode (not possible while an open/close cycle is in progress; all door commands are ignored while in this mode). Press and release SELECT to cycle through the adjustable variables; the current value shows on the seven-segment display. UP/DOWN steps the value (hold for auto-repeat every half second). You must press SET to save - the display blanks momentarily to confirm; unsaved adjustments are discarded. Hold SELECT again for three seconds to exit; values are committed to flash memory on exit.
The key variable is Max Cur. (maximum motor current), displayed as a value 0-68 that maps linearly to 3.0-20.0 amps in 0.25 A steps (0 = 3 A, 68 = 20 A; factory setting 0). Set it high enough to seat the door firmly but low enough that an obstruction triggers reversal rather than crushing force. The second variable, Open Sw. En. (On/Of, factory Of), enables use of the OPENED position switch during opening.
Two service shortcuts work inside Programming Mode: holding SET + UP + DOWN for two seconds shows FS and restores factory defaults; holding SELECT + DOWN for two seconds displays the lifetime completed-close cycle counter in multiples of 10,000 (00 = under 10,000; 99 = 1,000,000 or more) - useful for judging wear on rollers, pivots, and the drive itself.
Display and indicator reference
- Flashing OP - open cycle in progress. Solid OP - door fully open.
- Flashing CL - close cycle in progress. Solid CL - door fully closed.
- FS - factory settings being restored.
- Two-digit number (with SELECT+DOWN held) - cycle counter x 10,000.
Wiring and interlocks
Per the 3580 schematic the board takes +12 VDC and -12 VDC ground; the drive is internally fused (30 A on the power input) but an external fuse or circuit breaker is customer-supplied and required. The COM terminal and door position switch feed an interlock relay that puts +12 VDC out to the coach interlock circuit whenever the door is open, and switches the stepwell light. When diagnosing "door works but interlock/step light doesn't," test that relay and the door position switch before condemning the controller.
Manual release
Because the drive holds the door by motor stall against its stop rather than a separate lock, removing power to the controller frees the drive for manual movement in an emergency. The mechanical emergency-release device itself is part of the door hardware, not this board - follow the coach-specific release placard, and always restore power and cycle the door electrically afterward to re-establish a known state.

Troubleshooting
Door starts to close, then reverses and reopens on its own
- Look for a physical obstruction, binding roller, or dragging seal - reversal means max current was reached before the CLOSED input went high
- Verify the CLOSED position switch pulls the input to battery voltage at full close; a failed switch makes every close look like an obstruction
- Check Max Cur. setting in Programming Mode - a value too low for a stiff door causes nuisance reversals
- Measure battery voltage at the board under load; low supply voltage raises current draw
Door stops mid-travel and nothing happens until the switch is operated again
- Suspect the 30-second overall timeout - the board removes motor power after 30 s regardless of state; find out why travel took that long (binding, low voltage, weak motor)
- Check the seven-segment display: still flashing OP/CL means the cycle never completed
- Inspect motor brushes and M+/M- connections for intermittent contact
No response to the driver switch at all
- Confirm the OPEN/CLOSE inputs are being pulled to ground by the switch (they are active-low); back-probe at the board
- Verify +12 VDC and ground at the board power terminals and check the 30 A input fuse and the customer-supplied external fuse/breaker
- Make sure the board is not in Programming Mode - open/close state changes are ignored while in it; hold SELECT (HOLD) 3 s to exit
- Check the -12 VDC ground side of the driver control switch circuit
Door operates but stepwell light or door-open interlock does not work
- Test the interlock relay (85/86 coil, 30/87/87A contacts per the 3580 schematic) and its +12 VDC feed
- Check the door position switch that grounds the relay coil
- Verify the +12 VDC-out-to-interlock wire continuity to the coach interlock circuit
Settings do not stick after adjustment
- Press SET while the desired value is displayed - display blanks to confirm; adjustments without SET are ignored
- Exit Programming Mode properly (hold SELECT 3 s) - values write to flash on exit
- If the board shows FS unexpectedly, the SET+UP+DOWN factory-reset combination was triggered; re-enter all settings
Door closes but never shows solid CL / never signals closed to interlocks
- Verify the CLOSED input is pulled and held at battery voltage at full close
- Adjust the closed position switch or striker so it actuates before the motor reaches current limit
- Check wiring between the position switch and the CLOSED terminal for opens or corrosion
