KVH TracVision TV3 Satellite TV Antenna — Operation, Status Lights, Care & No-Signal Troubleshooting
Dome-enclosed tracking satellite TV antenna paired with a belowdecks TV-Hub that powers it and feeds the receivers. Covers day-to-day operation via the web interface, what the TV-Hub and IP AutoSwitch lights mean, radome and cabling care, and a practical no-signal checklist.
Overview
The TracVision TV3 is a self-pointing satellite TV antenna: a motorized dish inside a protective radome that finds and tracks DIRECTV, DISH Network, Bell TV, or linear-service satellites while the vehicle is parked or moving. It works with a companion TV-Hub box mounted inside: the hub feeds the antenna power, data, and satellite signal over a single RF1 coax, hosts the web interface, and distributes signal to the receivers. The TV-Hub runs on 10-30 VDC (hard-wired, 10 A fuse) and must be grounded to the vehicle's common ground - a chassis-to-ground difference of 2 V or more is a dangerous floating-ground condition. Nothing except the antenna's RF1 cable may ever be connected to the hub's Antenna jack: it carries supply voltage that will destroy receivers, splitters, or multiswitches.
Operation and status indications
Power the system from the TV-Hub's rear switch. On first power-up (and after updates are loaded) the hub checks and updates the antenna's software - all three status lights alternate orange during the update; do not remove power, it can take up to 40 minutes. In normal operation the TV-Hub and Power lights are green and the Antenna light flashes green while searching, going steady when locked. The user-facing controls live in the web interface: connect to the hub's Wi-Fi access point (SSID TVHub-<serial>) and browse to http://tvhub.kvh or 172.16.0.1, or use a wired laptop at 169.254.253.1, or the TracVision TV/RV mobile app. From the Home page you switch satellites and pick the master receiver (the receiver that controls satellite selection). Systems with IP AutoSwitches show a status LED on each: green = registered and currently master, orange = registered but not master, flashing orange = initializing, red = cannot communicate/register or no network. The rear-panel Reset button on the TV-Hub reverts all network settings to factory defaults.
Care
Keep the radome installed at all times - it protects the moving antenna from wind, rain, and debris - and clean it regularly, because dirt buildup degrades reception. If the radome must come off, remove power first (moving parts can injure), never lift the antenna by the radome, and never set the radome on a hot metal surface, which can warp it. Do not let the internal assembly spin freely; that can damage the limit switch. The RF cabling deserves respect: the guide is blunt that low-quality, poorly terminated, or improperly installed RF cables are the most common cause of system problems. Connections at the antenna base are packed with silicone grease, torqued to spec (20 in-lbs at the antenna, 15 in-lbs at the hub), and weather-sealed - preserve that when servicing, and never reuse old coax from a previous installation. Site rules that still apply when equipment gets added later: the antenna needs a clear view of the sky at 10-80 degrees elevation, and it must never sit at the same level as, or in the beam path of, a radar - keep at least 1 m separation and stay outside the radar's +/-15 degree elevation band or the LNB can be damaged.
Software and configuration
System software and the satellite library are updated through the web interface (Updates page) or mobile app; updates take up to 45 minutes with lights alternating orange. Re-run the Setup Wizard whenever the configuration changes (satellites, receivers, AutoSwitches added or removed). On linear-service systems the LNB skew angle must be set mechanically to the angle the wizard reports (two M4 set screws behind the radome, power off first). SWM configurations power up in order: all system components first, receivers and DVRs last, because tuners get their SWM channels assigned at startup.
Signal expectations
Reception requires being inside the satellite footprint (coverage maps at kvh.com/footprint). Heavy rain or snow temporarily interrupts reception; trees, buildings, bridges, masts, and other onboard equipment block it. These are environmental limits, not faults.

Troubleshooting
No satellite TV signal on any receiver
- Check for blockage first: the antenna needs a clear 10-80 degree view of the sky - trees, buildings, bridges, or a badly chosen parking spot are the most common cause
- Heavy rain or snow interrupts reception temporarily; verify weather before touching hardware
- Confirm the vehicle is inside the selected satellite's coverage footprint (kvh.com/footprint)
- Check TV-Hub lights: all three alternating orange = software update in progress, wait up to 40 minutes without cutting power
- Antenna light stuck flashing green = still searching: verify the correct satellite/service is selected in the web interface
- Inspect the RF1 connection at hub and antenna base - bad or loose coax terminations are the most common cause of system problems
- Clean the radome if heavily soiled
TV-Hub or Antenna status light not green
- Power light off: check the 10-30 VDC supply, the inline 10 A fuse, and the rear power switch
- Antenna light off or red: check the RF1 cable continuity between hub and antenna
- All lights alternating orange: update in progress - do not power off
- After a failed update, power-cycle the hub and reinstall the software from the Updates page
One receiver has no signal, others fine
- Check the receiver's coax back to the hub/splitter and any splitter port; terminate unused splitter outputs with 75-ohm terminators
- DISH/Bell: receiver must be DISH Pro-compatible
- SWM systems: total tuners must not exceed 13 and no more than two splitters per path; power receivers up after the rest of the system
- Reset the receiver (unplug 15 seconds) if the hub cannot communicate with it
Cannot switch satellites from a receiver
- Only the master receiver controls satellite selection - set the master on the web interface Home page or press the Master Select button on that receiver's IP AutoSwitch
- IP AutoSwitch LED red: check its Ethernet connection and that it is on the same LAN segment as the TV-Hub
- Linear receivers: DiSEqC satellite slots in the receiver must be configured in exactly the same order as in the antenna
- DIRECTV coax-network setups: verify receiver static IPs are in the TV-Hub's subnet and external device access is enabled
Cannot reach the web interface
- Connect to the TVHub-<serial> Wi-Fi network and browse to http://tvhub.kvh or 172.16.0.1
- Wired fallback: DHCP laptop directly into the hub's Ethernet port, browse to 169.254.253.1
- If the hub was put in Infrastructure Wi-Fi mode or settings are lost, press the rear Reset button to restore factory network settings
- On a vehicle LAN, use the static IP that was assigned at installation
Reception degraded after adding equipment on the roof
- Confirm the new mast/antenna/radar does not block the 10-80 degree look angle toward the satellite arc
- Radar must be at least 1 m away and outside its +/-15 degree elevation band relative to the TracVision - radar energy can permanently damage the LNB
