Kramer VS-88H2A 4K HDMI 8x8 Matrix Switcher — Operation, EDID, Resets & AV Fault Guide

The 8-in/8-out HDMI matrix that routes video sources to the coach monitors, with an independent 8x8 analog audio matrix. Covers front-panel routing, the 7-segment display codes, web control, EDID management, HDCP, all reset procedures, and the black-screen/no-audio faults that account for most service calls.

Overview

The VS-88H2A sits in the AV rack and routes any of eight HDMI sources to any of eight displays, HDCP 2.2 compliant up to 4K@60 (4:4:4). Alongside the video matrix it runs a full audio matrix: HDMI embedded audio can be extracted (de-embedded) to eight balanced analog outputs, analog inputs on 3.5 mm jacks can be embedded into HDMI outputs, and ARC audio from displays can be routed back. It is controlled three ways: front-panel buttons, the embedded web pages over Ethernet, and Protocol 3000 commands over RS-232 (115200 8-N-1) or IP (TCP 5000 / UDP 50000). Power is a universal 100-240 VAC inlet with a rear rocker switch and fuse; the enclosure is fan-cooled 1U.

Front-panel operation

On power-up the unit takes about 10 seconds to initialize, cycling its firmware versions on the 7-segment display, then shows the IN-OUT routing status. Basic video switch: press VIDEO, press an OUT button (its display digit flashes), then an IN button. Press ALL instead of an output to send one input everywhere. Setup modes time out after 10 seconds of inactivity. Reading the buttons: a lit IN button means an active source is detected; a lit OUT button means a display is connected; a flashing OUT button means the connected display is not HDCP-capable - route an HDCP-encrypted source there and the screen goes black by design. On the 7-segment display: a digit is the input routed to that output, P = test pattern, 0 = muted, A = analog audio source, d = embedded digital audio, C = ARC audio, a dot = that HDMI output is in ARC mode, and in EDID mode d = default EDID, L = EDID loaded from file. Hold LOCK to lock/unlock the panel. Six built-in 480p test patterns (press MUTE/PATTERN, an output, then inputs 1-6: color bars, black, white, red, green, blue) let you prove a display path without any source. The unit stores 16 complete setups via STO/RCL.

Web control

The device ships with DHCP on; if no server answers it falls back to 192.168.1.39 (mask 255.255.255.0). Default login is Admin/Admin and security is off until enabled. The web pages do everything the panel does plus: per-output switching policy (safe vs standard), auto-switching (manual / priority / last-connected per output), timeout settings (output 5V cut-off and video-lost timers - keep the 5V cut-off longer than the video-loss timer), audio breakaway with volume/balance sliders, EDID management, firmware upgrade, and factory reset. After changing the subnet mask, power-cycle the unit.

EDID basics

EDID is the capability handshake a display presents to a source. The matrix stores an EDID per input; if it does not match what the connected display can do, you get no picture, wrong resolution, or missing audio after swapping monitors. From the panel: hold EDID + STO until both light, press the input(s) to program, press the output whose display you want to copy from, then press EDID and wait about 5 seconds. Selecting a disconnected output instead copies the Kramer default EDID. The web EDID Management page can also copy from an output, an input, the default, or upload an EDID file. Rule of thumb after any display change: recopy EDID to the affected inputs.

Reset procedures

  • Hard reset to factory defaults (including IP): press and hold the rear-panel RESET button for 7-8 seconds.
  • Full factory reset from the front panel: power off, hold LOCK + EDID + STO while powering on, keep held 3 seconds, release.
  • Web reset: Device Settings page, Reset button.
  • Protocol 3000: send #factory.

After a factory reset: DHCP on, all inputs on default EDID, HDCP on for all inputs, 1-to-1 routing, manual switch mode.

HDCP per input

Hold EDID + RCL to enter HDCP mode: a lit IN button = HDCP 1.4 on, flashing = HDCP 2.2, dark = off. Toggle inputs, then press LOCK to save. Disabling HDCP on an input is the standard fix for a computer source that needlessly encrypts and blacks out a non-HDCP display.

Troubleshooting

Display shows black screen with a source routed
  1. Check the OUT button: flashing means the display is not HDCP-capable, and an HDCP-encrypted source will intentionally show black - disable HDCP on that input (hold EDID+RCL) if the source permits, or use an HDCP-capable display
  2. Route a built-in test pattern (MUTE/PATTERN) to the output: pattern OK = matrix and display path good, problem is the source or its EDID
  3. Check the 7-segment display for 0 (output muted) under that output and unmute (select output, press MUTE/PATTERN)
  4. Recopy EDID to the input if the display was recently changed
  5. Check the Timeout Settings: the output may have shut down its 5V after signal loss - verify the source is actually outputting
Video present but no audio at a display
  1. In D-AUDIO mode, a flashing OUT button means the display does not support LPCM audio
  2. A flashing IN button means the source is sending Dolby/AC-3 bitstream a TV may not decode - set the source to PCM output
  3. Check for 0 (muted) or A/d codes under the output: audio may be routed from a different source than the video (breakaway mode) - press VIDEO+D-AUDIO together and re-route to restore audio-follow-video
  4. A dot under the output means it is in ARC mode - disable ARC on that output if it should play program audio
Cannot reach the web pages / unknown IP
  1. Device defaults to DHCP; check the router's client list
  2. With no DHCP server it falls back to 192.168.1.39 - connect a PC set to a static 192.168.1.x address and browse to it
  3. Default credentials are Admin/Admin when security is enabled
  4. As a last resort hold the rear RESET button 7-8 seconds to restore factory IP settings (this also resets routing config)
Front panel does not respond to button presses
  1. Panel lock is on - press and hold LOCK to release
  2. If mid-setup, the mode times out after 10 seconds; start the sequence again
  3. Power-cycle at the rear rocker switch and watch the 10-second initialization complete
Outputs switch sources by themselves
  1. Output is in Priority or Last-connected auto-switch mode - set it back to Manual on the Auto Switch Settings web page (or RCL+MUTE/PATTERN, output, IN 1, LOCK from the panel)
  2. Check the video-lost timer in Timeout Settings; short timers make the unit jump to the next source quickly on flaky inputs
Wrong resolution or intermittent picture after equipment swap
  1. Recopy the EDID from the newly connected output to its source input, then power-cycle the source
  2. Verify high-quality HDMI cabling rated for 18 Gbps on 4K60 paths; long or poor cables are a routine cause
  3. Try the safe switching policy on that output for cleaner transitions
Device dead / no lights
  1. Confirm the rear mains rocker switch is on
  2. Check the rear-panel fuse; replace only with the rating on the product label
  3. Verify the rack outlet with another device
