Girard G-Link Controls: Pairing and Programming Every Motor Controller, Remote, Ignition Retract and Sensor

The master programming reference for Girard's G-Link 433.92 MHz awning control ecosystem: exact pairing sequences for the GC136, GC274B/C and 98GC74 AC motor controllers, wireless (remote) motors, the GC946G 12 V ignition retract module, dry-contact module, motion sensor and anemometer, plus remote handset and wall switch procedures and the control faults techs hit most.

How G-Link works

Every Girard motor, controller, sensor and switch communicates by RF at 433.92 MHz - no control wiring between devices. Components must be electronically paired before they will talk; field programming is needed after replacing a module, adding a remote, or when a unit loses its code. Range exceeds 500 ft open air and about 100 ft through obstructions (98GC74: 650/110 ft). Each controller stores 20 paired devices; a 21st overwrites the most recently programmed one, leaving the other 19 intact.

The golden rules before any pairing session:

  • Power the receiver (controller or remote motor) OFF for at least 10 seconds before starting.
  • Execute each step within 10 seconds of the last (only 6 seconds on the 98GC74 and 98GC229) or the module reverts and you start over.
  • Remove power from every other awning on the coach so a neighboring receiver does not learn the code.
  • Read the whole sequence before touching anything.

AC motor controller wiring (GC136 / GC274B / GC274C)

All three run on 110 VAC 60 Hz from a 15 A breaker-protected circuit in a UL junction box. AC input: white neutral, black live, green earth. To the motor: white neutral, red direction 1, black direction 2, green earth. Ambient rating 0-130 F. The 98GC74 uses black/white input, red/brown motor output, and its long black wire is the antenna. The GC274B adds a 12 VDC LED output and an ignition-retract input: when triggered it retracts the awning, then removes motor power so it cannot deploy in motion.

GC274C / GC274B programming

Enter program mode: GC274C - press and hold the MIDDLE and RIGHT buttons together for about 10 seconds until the green LED flashes. GC274B - same buttons for about 3 seconds.

1. Pair a handset or wall switch:

  1. Power the controller.
  2. Enter program mode (green LED flashes).
  3. Press STOP on the controller - the LED goes solid.
  4. On the remote, select the desired channel, then press UP. The green LED extinguishes; done.

2. Cancel one remote: same as pairing but press DOWN on the remote at the last step.

3. Cancel ALL remotes: press and hold STOP + LEFT on the controller for at least 6 seconds; the LED lights, blinks, then extinguishes.

4. Reverse motor direction (no rewiring): press and hold LEFT + RIGHT on the controller for at least 6 seconds; LED lights, blinks, extinguishes.

GC136 programming

  1. Power the GC136 (after a 10 s power-off).
  2. Press the recessed PROGRAM button with a paper clip - green LED flashes.
  3. Press STOP on the controller - LED solid.
  4. Press IN on the remote being paired - LED extinguishes.

Cancel one remote: same sequence but press OUT. Cancel all: STOP + LEFT held 6 seconds. Toggle Continuous/Step: STOP + RIGHT held 6 seconds (in Step mode a press jogs; holding past 2 seconds goes continuous). Direction reversal on the GC136 is a physical switch on the module.

98GC74 programming (beeping receiver)

The 98GC74 confirms by beeping instead of an LED, and its window is short - 6 seconds per step.

  1. Power the module - it beeps once.
  2. Press P2 on the back of the remote (or wall switch) TWICE - one beep per press.
  3. Press IN on the remote. The awning should retract.
  4. If it extends instead, press STOP immediately, kill power to the module for 10 seconds, repeat steps 1-2 and finish with OUT instead of IN. That flips the direction mapping.

Wireless (remote) motors - motor with built-in receiver

  1. Remove power from the motor for at least 10 seconds, then power it - the receiver gives a soft beep.
  2. Press P2 on the remote TWICE (beep each press).
  3. Press DOWN and verify the awning extends. If it runs backwards, repeat and finish with UP instead.

Add a second remote WITHOUT cycling power (cycling erases the first): P2 twice on the existing remote, P2 once on the new one, then UP or DOWN to verify. Cancel a remote: power on, P2 twice on it, STOP once, then P2 once - three beeps confirm. Toggle continuous/step: P2, UP, P2.

GC946G 12 V ignition retract module

Mounts under the dash on a switched 12 V circuit (ignition or parking brake) and broadcasts retract-all when the circuit goes live. Three DIP switches set its mode (typical: 1-ON / 2-ON / 3-OFF); switch 1 powers the transmitter and ships OFF to preserve the battery - turn it on at install.

To controllers GC136 / GC154 / GC274A / GC274B / GC732G:

  1. Remove the module's four cover screws and set the DIP switches.
  2. Power the motor controller and the GC946G.
  3. Press PROGRAM on the motor controller (green LED flashes; red on GC732G).
  4. Press STOP on the controller (LED solid).
  5. Press UP on the GC946G - LED flashes and extinguishes.
  6. Extend the awning with a remote, then press UP on the GC946G: everything should retract.

To controllers 98GC74 / GC1146C: pair a normal remote first, power the controller (faint beep), connect the GC946G to 12 V, press P2 on the paired remote TWICE, press SET on the GC946G ONCE (beep), then verify with UP.

98GC779G motion sensor pairing

The sensor must be opened first: remove the two bracket screws, lift off the magnetized base plate, remove the four case screws, back plate and silicone insert, then flip the base plate magnet-down and sit the sensor on it so the magnet aligns with the internal reed switch - without that alignment the stored program cannot be changed.

  1. Set the sensitivity dial to 5 (98GC74 variant: dial to 0).
  2. Power-cycle the motor controller: off at least 10 seconds, then on.
  3. Connect the sensor to 12 VDC - purple LED lights then blinks. No blink = no power or magnet misaligned.
  4. Put the controller in program mode (PROGRAM button, or MIDDLE+RIGHT on a GC274B/C) - green LED flashes.
  5. Press STOP on the controller - LED solid.
  6. Press the sensor's program button - both LEDs flash once and extinguish.
  7. Press the sensor button again: the awning must retract. If not, repeat.
  8. Set the dial to working sensitivity 1-5 (factory 3; never above 5), reassemble, and mount on the lead rail.

On a 98GC74: P2 on the primary remote twice (bleep each), sensor program button once (several bleeps), then verify - the awning jogs, or shake the sensor for a full retract.

98GC116I anemometer pairing (GC274C shown)

  1. Set the wind-speed dial between 1 and 2.
  2. Power both units.
  3. Press PROGRAM on the controller (LED flashes), then STOP (LED solid).
  4. Press UP on the anemometer.
  5. Extend the awning and press UP again - it must retract. The UP button then disables the sensor for 5 minutes.

GC1149A dry-contact module modes

Pairs like a remote (jumper Common-to-Retract at the final pairing step). Choose its mode by holding SET on 12 V power: one quick LED flash = Continuous (default); hold ~12 s for two flashes = Step (hold-to-run); hold ~20 s for three flashes = Secondary Continuous (the same command button also stops).

Handsets and wall switches

98GC1063 (1-channel) and 98GC1029 (5-channel) handsets run on a CR2430 cell; the P2 pairing button hides under the back cover (Time and Mode buttons are unused). The 98GC661B 5-channel wall switch takes two CR2032 cells and doubles as a clock/calendar; mount it only through the factory screw holes - drilling the case kills the board. The 98GC229 wall switch hides its P2 button behind the center hole above the IN button and allows only 6 seconds per step. The hard-wired 12 V 98GC782 controls up to 20 awnings, locks/unlocks by holding LOCK or UNLOCK 10 seconds, and sets a custom channel count: hold CH- and CH+ until C appears, pick the count with IN/OUT, press STOP to save.

Troubleshooting

Pairing keeps failing / module seems to ignore the sequence
  1. A step exceeded the 10-second window (6 s on 98GC74 and 98GC229) - the module reverted; start over
  2. Receiver was not powered off for a full 10 seconds before starting
  3. Another awning receiver on the coach is still powered and swallowing the code - kill power to all other awnings
  4. Motion sensor: base-plate magnet not aligned with the reed switch, so the stored program cannot change
Awning runs the wrong direction from a newly paired control
  1. GC274B/C: hold LEFT + RIGHT 6 s to reverse the motor electronically
  2. 98GC74: re-pair finishing with the opposite button (OUT instead of IN)
  3. Wireless motor: repeat pairing and finish with UP instead of DOWN
  4. GC136: flip the physical reverse switch on the module
Remote suddenly stopped working after a new device was added
  1. 20-device memory: the newest pairing overwrites the most recently programmed slot - re-pair the lost device
  2. Check the handset battery (CR2430) and confirm the correct channel is selected
No awning responds while the engine is running
  1. Normal behavior: ignition retract module (GC946G/GC1102) removes awning motor power 60-90 s after ignition-on
  2. Shut the engine off / set parking brake per the install wiring, then retry
Motion sensor never triggers, or triggers constantly
  1. Confirm 12 VDC supply (purple LED must light then blink on power-up)
  2. Sensitivity dial: factory 3; increase number for less sensitivity, never above 5
  3. Sensor only retracts the awning it is mounted on - do not expect fleet-wide retract
  4. Re-pair to the controller if the program button produces no retract
Anemometer does not retract awnings in wind
  1. Constant 12 VDC required whenever awnings are extended
  2. UP button pressed within the last 5 minutes disables it
  3. It commands a maximum of two awnings - coaches with more need a second unit
  4. Wind-speed dial set too high; re-verify pairing with dial at 1-2
GC274 buttons work at the module but the awning creeps or stops mid-travel
  1. Verify 15 A / 115 VAC supply - low inverter output stalls the motor
  2. Motor thermal protector tripped from exceeding the 2 min/hour duty cycle
  3. Check motor wiring: white neutral, red direction 1, black direction 2, green earth
98GC661B wall switch dead after mounting
  1. Case was drilled outside the factory screw holes - board damaged, replace module
  2. Reseat the two CR2032 cells in the battery tray; display should default to Mon 10:00
