Specialty Systems Field Notes — EPS Gensets, Fisher Lab Refrigerator, Fotokite Roof Box, Hologic Mobile Mammography

Short operational notes on the remaining specialty systems found on Farber coaches: the EPS diesel generator sets, the Fisher Scientific specimen refrigerator, the Fotokite tethered-drone rooftop box, and the site/EMI rules that govern Hologic mobile mammography coaches - what each is, what routine attention it needs, and when to call Farber service.

EPS J-20T4 / J-30T4 diesel gensets (Engine Power Source)

EPS is Engine Power Source of Rock Hill, SC. Their J-20T4 and J-30T4 are the vehicle-mounted diesel generator sets on several coaches: Kubota Tier 4 turbo-diesel engines (3-cylinder D1803TI on the J-20, 4-cylinder V2403TI on the J-30, both 1800 RPM) driving Marathon generator ends rated roughly 19.4 kW and 27.9 kW continuous at 120/240 V. Full-load fuel burn is about 1.5 and 2.1 US gal/hr respectively.

Operating rules: ultra-low-sulfur diesel only and never biodiesel; API CJ-4 (or ACEA-E9) engine oil - using anything else voids the engine warranty. Before any work on the electrical panel or the genset itself, disconnect the positive battery cable. The Tier 4 engine uses a high-pressure common-rail fuel system: no part of it may ever be adjusted in the field.

Routine attention (from the factory service table): change oil and filter at the first 50 hours, then every 400 hours; drain the water separator every 50 hours and replace both fuel filters at 500 hours; inspect and clean the fuel pump pre-filter (50/100 h); clean the air filter at 250 hours and replace the element yearly; inspect belts at 250 hours, change at 500; check coolant level every 100 hours and replace coolant, hoses, air hoses, fuel lines, and battery on a 2-year cycle; keep the radiator core clean (a plugged core is the classic overheating cause - clean it gently with a garden-hose sprayer, and never open a hot radiator). Common part numbers: oil filter HH164-32430, water-in-fuel element 1J430-43060, secondary fuel filter HH1J0-43170, fan belt NAPA 3VX335, Shell Rotella 15W-40 oil, Shellzone 50/50 coolant.

Call Farber for anything involving the common-rail fuel system, electrical panel faults, exhaust leaks (sooty deposits around joints), or repeated shutdowns - and give them the engine serial number.

Fisher Scientific FBG505SA laboratory refrigerator

The FBG505SA is a 5.5 cu ft (156 L) undercounter, laboratory-grade general-purpose refrigerator used for specimen and supply storage on medical coaches. It is thermoelectric (no compressor, R744/CO2 based, forced-air), holds +2 to +9 C in 0.5 C steps, and runs on 100-240 V at about 4 A. It has audible/visual alarms for temperature out of range, door ajar, power loss, and low battery, plus remote alarm terminals, and a 25 mm rear access port for a monitoring probe.

Routine attention: it is indoor-rated and needs good ventilation and a 10-32 C ambient - do not box it in tightly or let the bay overheat. Keep the door gasket clean (it has a perimeter heater), verify the leveling feet after the coach moves bases, and test the door-ajar and temperature alarms periodically. If the unit alarms for temperature and the ambient/ventilation checks pass, take it out of service and call Farber; there is no field-serviceable refrigeration circuit.

Fotokite Sigma Roof Top Box (tethered drone)

The Roof Top Box (RTB) is a 65 lb roof enclosure whose lids open so the tethered Fotokite Sigma kite can launch for persistent overhead video. Power is the critical integration: it draws up to 55 A at 12 V (about 700 W) at takeoff, sleeps below 12.4 V input, and wakes above 13.1 V, so it expects the engine (or a managed shore-power scheme) to be running; a 220 A-class alternator and a 60 A breaker near the battery are the baseline. A physical emergency-land button is installed near the operator, and an 8 mm hex drive (kept with the vehicle) opens the lids manually without power - use a drill on low speed with a torque limit and engage the clutch by pushing in.

Routine attention: after any manual lid opening, run the Lid Calibration Test, and after electrical work run the RTB Installation Test (both from a browser at 192.168.2.100:7357 with the tablet or a laptop on ETH3; tests may need two runs to record a pass). Confirm threadlocker on mounting hardware at inspection, keep the shell seal intact, and verify the emergency-land button works. Hologic Selenia Dimensions - mobile mammography site basics

Mammography coaches carry a Hologic Selenia Dimensions system whose selenium X-ray detector is sensitive to magnetic interference, so where the coach parks and how power is arranged matter as much as the equipment. Key rules from Hologic's site planning and EMI bulletins: the coach needs a stable power source - shore power is best; a generator must sit at least 3 m (10 ft) from the detector and intermittently supply 65 A at 208 VAC; a dual-conversion UPS/line conditioner carries the system, and the best UPS location is at the front of the coach near the driver, never within 10 ft of the detector. Interior temperature and humidity must be maintained at all times, including between clinics.

Parking and EMI: do not park near power transmission lines, outdoor transformers, or other high-power sources; dynamic 60 Hz fields (AC power lines) are the main image-quality threat, while static fields like the earth's are harmless. Hologic's screening threshold is an ELF reading under 0.8 milligauss (30 Hz-2 kHz) with no abnormal variance - and their field experience is that moving the equipment or the coach a short distance is usually the cheapest fix, while shielding is expensive and often ineffective. DC fluorescent dimmers and light dimmers in coaches are known offenders.

Division of labor: streaky or noisy images at one venue only = suspect the parking spot/EMI first and relocate; detector, gantry, or X-ray faults are Hologic service territory; coach power, UPS, HVAC, and generator issues are Farber work.

Investigate image-quality complaints as EMI/parking issues before calling Hologic.

Troubleshooting

EPS genset overheats or shuts down on temperature
  1. Inspect the radiator core for dirt/debris; clean gently with a garden-hose sprayer
  2. Check coolant level in the overflow bottle (between the lines) - never open a hot radiator
  3. Inspect fan/alternator belt condition and tension
  4. Check for collapsed or road-damaged tailpipe restricting exhaust
EPS genset hard to start or runs rough
  1. Verify ULSD fuel, no biodiesel; check for water in the separator and drain it
  2. Inspect fuel lines for pinches, cracks, or moisture indicating leaks
  3. Check battery and cable terminals for corrosion; clean and coat with dielectric grease
  4. Service the air filter element
  5. Do NOT touch the high-pressure common-rail system - call Farber with the engine serial number
Fisher refrigerator temperature alarm
  1. Check for door ajar and gasket obstruction
  2. Verify bay ambient is 10-32 C and ventilation is unobstructed
  3. Confirm power (breaker, cord) - the unit alarms on power loss
  4. If checks pass and temperature still drifts, remove specimens to backup storage and call Farber
Fotokite RTB dead or triggers emergency landings
  1. Measure input voltage at the RTB: it sleeps below 12.4 V and needs ~14 V standby / above 12.2 V at 55 A peak - run the engine or check the alternator
  2. Check the 60 A breaker/fuse near the battery
  3. On hybrid/EV or shore-power vehicles, verify the wake/sleep enable switch and DC/DC budget
  4. Lids misaligned after manual opening: run the Lid Calibration Test
  5. Flight/kite faults: contact Fotokite support directly
Hologic image quality complaints (lines, noise) at a venue
  1. Treat as EMI first: check for nearby transmission lines, transformers, large UPS units, or dimmer systems
  2. Confirm the UPS and generator distances (UPS 10 ft, generator 10 ft minimum from detector)
  3. Move the coach a short distance and retest - the most effective and cheapest fix in Hologic's field experience
  4. If it persists across venues, escalate to Hologic service - detector work is theirs
