APC Smart-UPS 750/1000/1500/2200/3000 VA (SMT-C Series) — Operation, Indicators & Battery Service

Overview

The APC Smart-UPS SMT-C family is the uninterruptible power supply most commonly found in the equipment racks of specialty coaches. On a vehicle it sits between the AC bus (shore power, generator, or inverter output) and the loads that cannot tolerate even a momentary dropout: broadcast encoders, network switches and routers, servers, AV matrices, and medical imaging support electronics. When the coach transfers between shore, generator, and inverter, the UPS rides through the switchover on its internal sealed lead-acid batteries so the protected rack never sees the gap.

The manual covers ten electrical sizes across two form factors. Tower models: SMT750C, SMT750IC, SMT1000C, SMT1000IC, SMT1500C, SMT1500CNC, SMT1500IC, SMT2200C, SMT2200IC, SMT3000C, SMT3000IC. Rack-mount 2U models: SMT750RM2UC, SMT750RM2UCNC, SMT750RMI2UC, SMT1000RM2UC, SMT1000RMI2UC, SMT1500RM2UC, SMT1500RM2UCNC, SMT1500RMI2UC, SMT2200RM2UC, SMT2200RM2UCNC, SMT2200RMI2UC, SMT3000RM2UC, SMT3000RM2UCNC, SMT3000RMI2UC. Models ending in I are 230 V units; the rest are 120 V. Models ending in NC ship with a factory-installed Network Management Card. All have a SmartConnect Ethernet port for cloud monitoring, plus USB and serial ports for PowerChute shutdown software (USB and serial cannot be used at the same time). Modbus is available over serial/USB and over TCP port 502.

Front-panel LEDs and beeper

  • Online LED (green): output is on and the unit is running from AC. Normal state.
  • On-Battery LED (orange) + short beeps: the UPS is carrying the load on battery. Expected during generator-to-shore transfers; investigate if it happens while parked on good shore power.
  • Error Detected LED (red) + constant beep and an error message: internal UPS fault. Do not keep operating it — power it down and service or replace the unit.
  • Replace Battery LED (red), one minute of beeping every five hours: the battery failed self-test. Recharge at least four hours, re-run a self-test, and replace the cartridge if it fails again.
  • Replace Battery LED flashing, one beep every 2 seconds: the battery connector is not fully seated — reseat it.
  • All display LEDs flashing in sequence: the UPS was commanded off remotely (software or accessory card); it restarts on its own when AC returns.
  • Site wiring fault message (120 V units): the pedestal or coach outlet has missing ground, hot-neutral reversal, or an overloaded neutral — a real finding on campground/venue shore power; have the source inspected.

Configuration points that matter on a coach

Shore power at venues is often chronically low or high. The 120 V units transfer to battery below 106 Vac and above 127 Vac by default (adjustable 97–106 and 127–136 Vac; 230 V units 207/253 Vac default). If the UPS keeps clicking to battery on a long shore cord, widen the transfer window or set Sensitivity to Reduced/Low rather than letting it cycle the battery all day. Local Power Quality (Good/Fair/Poor) sets these automatically. The UPS self-tests at startup and every 14 days by default. The Low Battery alarm sounds at 150 seconds of remaining runtime unless changed. Outlet groups can be configured to shed non-essential loads on battery to stretch runtime for the critical gear.

Battery replacement

Batteries are user-replaceable sealed lead-acid cartridges behind the front bezel. Typical service life is two to five years; APC directs replacement at least every five years or when the unit flags it, whichever comes first — heat, poor shore power, and frequent short discharges (all normal coach conditions) push life toward the short end. Procedure: remove the front bezel, open the battery compartment door, unplug the internal battery connector, slide the old cartridge out, install the genuine APC RBC cartridge, reconnect, then set Date of Last Battery Replacement in the Configuration menu so the predictive replace-by date in the About menu stays accurate. On rack units the battery connector is on the front panel; batteries in a powered UPS can shock — remove rings and watches and use insulated tools. Replace immediately (unit off, unplugged, batteries disconnected) on any overtemperature indication or electrolyte leakage. Always recycle the old cartridge.

Runtime care

A freshly connected UPS reaches about 90% charge in the first three hours — do not count on full runtime during that window. Keep vents clear and ambient below 25 °C where possible; heat is the main battery killer in a coach bay. In storage (coach parked for the season), recharge the UPS battery every six months. If backup time seems short after an outage, recharge fully before judging the battery; if it is near end of life, replace it proactively even before the Replace Battery LED comes on. Batteries must be disconnected before transporting the coach-removed unit or shipping it for service.

Troubleshooting

UPS will not turn on / no output
  1. Press the ON/OFF key once (unit may simply be off)
  2. Verify AC cord is secure at the unit and the coach outlet; test the outlet with a lamp
  3. Check/reset the UPS input circuit breaker on the rear panel; shed load if it tripped
  4. Confirm the internal battery connector is fully seated
  5. If an internal error is shown, take the unit out of service
UPS runs on battery while shore/generator power is present
  1. Check for tripped input breaker; reduce load and reset
  2. Measure input voltage - venue shore power that is chronically high/low or distorted causes transfers
  3. Widen High/Low Transfer points or reduce Sensitivity if the connected gear tolerates it
  4. Try a different pedestal/circuit before condemning the UPS
Backup runtime is shorter than expected
  1. Recharge at least 4 hours after any outage before judging the battery
  2. Check load percentage on the display; unplug non-essential loads (printers etc.)
  3. Check battery age against the replace-by date; replace near end of life even without a Replace Battery LED
  4. Check bay temperature - elevated heat permanently reduces capacity
